Brendan Rodgers has revealed that it was striker Mario Balotelli’s decision

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that it was striker Mario Balotelli’s decision to not be part of the match against Arsenal due to an unspecified medical condition.

The striker was not in the matchday squad and it turned out to be a very bad day for Liverpool. The club lost 4-1 against the gunners and it has effectively ended any hopes of Champions League qualification for next season. Balotelli has been a controversial figure at Liverpool this campaign. After making a £ 16 million move from AC Milan in the summer, the striker was seen as a major gamble due to his troublesome nature.

More worryingly, Liverpool have had to deal with poor form from the striker throughout the campaign. He has failed to settle into the team that previously scored a lot of goals with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez leading the line. For much of the campaign, Sturridge has found himself on the sidelines. This has contributed to Balotelli playing on his own up front for the Reds. Astonishingly, the striker has managed only three goals this season and only one of them has come in the Premier League.Rodgers was a disappointed man after the loss against Arsenal, but he still had to explain the reason for Balotelli’s omission. Brendan Rodgers says that Mario cannot get back in Starting Line up

Brendan Rodgers has categorically stated that striker Mario Balotelli cannot get back into the starting line-up unless he starts working much harder. The Italian international lost his place after poor run of form that saw him go more than 15 league matches without a goal.

He was signed from AC Milan in the summer for £ 16 million, but it was reported that Liverpool were ready to cut their losses even as early as in January. Such was the poor performances of Balotelli and the recent return of Daniel Sturridge sees the 24-year-old on the periphery.

Rodgers does not rule out the possibility of seeing the big man once again, but he says that Balotelli should be prepared for life on the bench if he is not prepared to work harder. Balotelli is known for his childish attitude and inability to remain a top professional. This has already cost him a place at several top clubs like Manchester City and Inter Milan. Even though Balotelli has been able to put in some good performances in recent weeks,Rodgers reckons that he will not be able to bring back the player unless he starts to become effervescent in training.
