Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is a major doubt for the match against Stoke City.
This is the final match of the campaign and it could hold a lot of significance for Balotelli’s future at Anfield. After having scored only one league goal throughout the campaign, it has been widely speculated that the Italian international may be sold very soon. He came to Liverpool for £ 16 million, but the Merseyside outfit are expected to cut their losses sooner rather than later. Balotelli has scored only three goals in 21 appearances across all competitions.
Liverpool’s failure to secure Champions League football has largely been put down to the poor performances by the former Manchester City striker. Despite his uncertain future, Balotelli played a number of minutes during the month of April. However, he has not featured for the club since the 1-0 defeat against Hull City. It looks unlikely that he will appear in the final match of the season as well. Hence, it is effectively thought that Balotelli’s career at Anfield is almost over and he may wear a different jersey going into the new season. More importantly, Rodgers will also have to think about replacing Steven Gerrard who leaves for LA Galaxy.
“Mario is a doubt. Apart from that most are fit.Our season doesn’t finish until the whistle blows on Sunday. We want to finish strong. That’s our ambition at Stoke,” said Rodgers. “Balotelli is a great name. He’d suit a lot of teams. I’d take him at Sampdoria in a heartbeat. A partnership of Eto’o-Balotelli would be fantastic,” said Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero in a recent interview. A move to Sampdoria will see Balotelli partnering the much experienced Samuel Eto’o in the attack. The former Chelsea forward moved to the Italian club only recently.
